Edinburgh International Airport is 12km west of the city and
recieves over 40 return flights to London each day. It also
has regular services to and from some other major European cities and one
transatlantic route to New York. Full details of all flights to
and from Edinburgh can be obtained from the airport web site (by
clicking on the link above) or by contacting the airport on Tel: +
44345 757 757; Fax: + 44 131 335 3181 or your local travel
agency. From the airpost you can choose to travel to the city centre
either bus or by taxi.
Buses run at least every ten minutes between the hours of 6am and
9pm, and every half hour outside those times. The fare is
£3.30 single fare or £5.00 return. It is worth getting
a return ticket as you can take the return journey up to a month
later. The bus stop is just outside the arrivals terminal and the
journey should take about 25 minutes. The
bus will take you to Princes Street and Waverley train station
where you can get a taxi, a bus (see the information under "By Train") or a walk to your
hotel.
Taxis are more expensive but less hassle as they will take
you directly to your hotel/dorms. A journey to Pollock Halls would
probably cost about £15.00 to £20.00 and should take
about 25 to 30 minutes. Airport taxis are well regulated so there is no
need to worry about being ripped off. It is not necessary to tip
the taxi drivers, but if you wish to do so then £1 or
£2 is sufficient. Taxis can be picked up directly outside
the arrivals terminal.
Please note: If your return flight is departing from Edinburgh
during the day please leave plenty of time to get to the airport
as the roads become very congested during certain times. A 25
minute journey can easily become a 90 minute journey during rush
hour.
The train service from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh
Waverley along the east coast line is fast and reliable. The
journey from London takes about 4 hours and does not require you
to change trains. Return tickets from London can cost anywhere between £20 and
£200 depending on when you book and when you want to
travel. Trains depart Kings Cross and Waverley at least every
hour. Timetable information and ticket booking is available online
at http://www.thetrainline.com.
From the station you can get a taxi to your hotel/Pollock Halls
for less than £5.00. Alternatively you could catch a bus
from Princes Street for 80 pence. Make sure you have the correct
fare as the buses do not give change (apart from the airport buses). The No.21 and the No.33 will take
you to Pollock Halls. Bus timetables and maps can be found at http://www.lothianbuses.co.uk
